Why Autumn Is the Best Time to Visit the Costa Cálida

Autumn is the Costa Cálida's sweet spot. The sea off Cabo de Palos averages about 22.6°C in October and 19.2°C in November, warm enough for swimming well into the month, and the summer crowds have gone. October is also excellent for diving in the Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas marine reserve.

Ask owners who have been here a few years when they enjoy the coast most, and most will say October. The water still holds its summer warmth, parking is easy and restaurants have time to talk. It is also the best time to see what living here year-round really feels like, rather than how it looks in August. Here is what to expect.

How warm is the sea in October and November?

MonthAverage sea temperature, Cabo de PalosRange over the last 10 years
October22.6°C18°C to 25.4°C
November19.2°C15.8°C to 23.3°C

The sea cools steadily through November, from around 21°C at the start of the month to around 18°C by the end. The Mar Menor, being shallow, warms and cools faster than the open Mediterranean.

Is autumn good for diving at Cabo de Palos?

Yes. The Reserva Marina de Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas, created in 1995, is one of the Mediterranean's best-known dive areas, with wide Posidonia seagrass meadows and abundant fish.

  • Diving needs an authorisation, and visitor numbers are capped. Weekends and holidays use the stricter high-season limits.
  • The core zone around Isla Hormiga, El Bajo de El Mosquito and the islets El Hormigón and La Losa is closed to everything except authorised science.
  • Divers must pass Spain's basic responsible-diving test, which is valid for two years.
  • The reserve was extended by 168 hectares in 2026, and dives in that area are allowed only between sunrise and sunset.
  • One Cabo de Palos centre charges €45 for a guided reserve dive, not including the reserve fee.

A local dive centre will handle the paperwork. Expect cooler water at depth: one diver logged 16°C at 20 metres on 1 November.

What are La Manga and Águilas like out of season?

La Manga. The strip quietens noticeably after the summer, although Hermosa Fest (10 and 11 October 2026) brings a lively weekend.

Cabo de Palos. The harbour restaurants and lighthouse walk come into their own on a calm autumn day.

Águilas. A working town all year round, with its coves and seafood weeks. Shops in Águilas may open on any Sunday all year.

Prices. Accommodation usually costs less after the summer. Compare before booking.

The resorts make an easy base for all three. From Serena Breeze in Los Alcázares, or Santa Rosalia near Torre-Pacheco, you can be in Cabo de Palos for lunch and back on the course in the afternoon. Águilas, at the far end of the coast, is better saved for a full day out.

What should I watch out for in autumn?

DANAs, isolated upper-level storm systems, can bring sudden heavy rain between September and November. Rain cut short Águilas's SaboreÁguilas food fair on 4 October 2026.

None of this should put you off. Most autumn days are calm and bright, and a DANA usually passes within a day or two. Check the AEMET (Spanish state weather agency) warnings and keep plans flexible. We arrange and accompany viewing trips across the resorts, and in autumn we always build a little slack into the schedule for exactly this reason.
