Murcia by Train: A Car-Free Weekend with Ouigo

You can reach Murcia from Madrid by high-speed train in about 2 hours 45 minutes. Ouigo runs from Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor to Murcia del Carmen, stopping at Albacete and Elche, with adult fares from €9. The city centre is compact enough to explore entirely on foot.

Many of our buyers fly into Madrid for other reasons, or simply prefer the train. Since the high-speed line reached Murcia, a car-free weekend in the city has become easy, and it is a relaxed way to get a feel for the region before you think about where you might live. Here is how it works in practice.

How long is the train from Madrid to Murcia?

OperatorMadrid stationTypical journeyNotes
OuigoChamartín-Clara Campoamor2h49 to 3h29Stops at Albacete and Elche; fares from €9
Renfe AVEChamartín (occasionally Atocha)From about 2h45Fastest trains stop at Elche and Orihuela
Renfe AvloChamartínAbout 3h35Low-cost, one daily train via Alicante

On Ouigo's published autumn 2026 timetable, trains leave Madrid for Murcia at 08:15 (arriving 11:42), 16:15 (arriving 19:04) and 18:45 (arriving 22:14). Heading back, they leave Murcia at 06:35 (arriving 10:23), 12:39 (arriving 15:23) and 19:53 (arriving 23:27). The morning train out and the evening train back fit a weekend neatly.

Children aged 4 to 13 travel from €7, and under-3s travel free on an adult's lap.

Which trains run on the route?

Renfe's AVE has run to Murcia since 20 December 2022, and Ouigo since September 2024. Some booking sites also list Iryo on the route, but I could find no Iryo announcement of a Murcia service.

What is Murcia del Carmen station like?

Murcia del Carmen is in Plaza de la Industria, in the Barrio del Carmen just south of the river. Adif, the rail infrastructure operator, lists it as open daily from 05:15 to 00:15, with a taxi rank and city bus connections.

The tram does not reach the station yet: a roughly 2 km extension with five new stops is still at the design and tender stage.

How do I get around Murcia without a car?

On foot. The historic centre is about 20 to 25 minutes' walk from the station, heading north across the Puente Viejo.

By bus. Adif lists several city bus lines at the station. That list dates from 2021, so check current line numbers.

By taxi. Taxis wait at the station rank.

To the coast. Regional trains from Murcia del Carmen serve Cartagena via Torre-Pacheco. Reaching the golf resorts themselves is easiest by taxi or a pre-arranged transfer.

What does a car-free weekend look like?

Friday. Take the 08:15 Ouigo and you arrive at 11:42, in good time for lunch. Walk to Plaza del Cardenal Belluga, where the Cathedral's façade is at its best in the afternoon light, and find a table nearby. In the evening, see a show at the Teatro Romea.

Saturday. Spend the morning at the Museo Salzillo, home to Francisco Salzillo's famous nativity figures. Then walk the Paseo Alfonso X el Sabio, the Glorieta de España and the riverside Jardín del Malecón, stopping for zarangollo and a marinera when you need a break.

Sunday. Start slowly with a pastel de carne, the city's favourite breakfast. Visit the Museo de la Ciencia y el Agua if you have time, then head back to Murcia del Carmen for the 19:53 Ouigo to Madrid.

If you would like to add a resort visit, that is easy to arrange. Corvera Hills sits between Murcia city and the coast, so it fits well into a train weekend. We arrange and accompany viewing trips across the resorts, and we can collect you from the station and bring you back in time for your train.
