Driving to Your Murcia Home from the UK, Ireland or the Netherlands

Driving to your Murcia home is a great way to arrive with your own car, your golf clubs and as much luggage as you like. From the UK, the ferry to Santander gets you to the Costa Cálida in about three days door to door; the overland route through France takes around 21 hours at the wheel over two or three days.

Why drive to your Murcia home at all?

Flying is quick, but driving down has real rewards. You arrive with your own car, already insured and familiar, so there's no hire desk and no hire bill for a long winter stay. Your golf clubs travel free in the boot, alongside the bikes, the good coffee machine and the boxes of bits you'd never fit into a 20 kg bag.

For many owners the drive becomes part of the adventure: a night in a French market town, a first coffee in the Spanish sun, and the moment the orange groves and the Sierra Espuña come into view.

How long does it take to drive from the UK to Murcia?

There are two main ways to do it: the ferry to northern Spain, or the Channel crossing and a drive through France.

How does the ferry route work?

The ferry from Portsmouth to Santander takes around 33 hours with two nights on board, and sails up to twice a week all year round, with fewer sailings in winter. Plymouth to Santander runs seasonally from mid-April to November. Basic fares start at around £273 for a car; with two passengers and a cabin, budget for more.

A typical rhythm looks like this:

1. Day one: drive to Portsmouth and board in the evening. 2. Day two: a full day at sea. Read, eat well, watch the Bay of Biscay go by. 3. Day three: arrive in Santander around 08:00. Expect to reach the Costa Cálida by about 17:30, with two or three fuel stops and roughly nine and a half hours of driving.

Sailings also run into Bilbao, where ships dock at Zierbena, about 21 km outside the city, so allow a little extra time to join the motorway south.

The big advantage is that you skip France entirely and arrive fresh, having slept in a cabin rather than a motorway hotel.

What's the overland route through France like?

If you prefer to keep moving, the Channel Tunnel and a drive through France works very well. Typical driving times:

That's around 21 hours of driving in total. Two overnight stops make it a relaxed trip; shared drivers who like an early start can do it with one.

Tolls: expect roughly €50-100 in France and around €40 in Spain. You can save about €50 by taking the A28 and N10 instead of the toll autoroutes, at the cost of around 90 extra minutes.

How much does driving to Murcia cost?

For a couple driving overland, a return trip typically comes to around £700-1,000 including fuel, tolls, two hotel nights and the Channel crossing. The ferry costs more upfront but swaps a long day's driving for two nights at sea.

On cost alone, budget flights for two usually win. Driving pays off when you're staying for a season, bringing the car for the whole winter, or carrying things you'd never check in on a plane: golf clubs, bikes, bedding, tools, the dog's bed.

Can you drive to Murcia from Ireland, the Netherlands or Belgium?

Yes, and for some owners it's the natural choice.

From Ireland: most Irish owners join the same routes by taking a ferry to Britain or France first, then following the Santander ferry or the overland route above.

From the Netherlands and Belgium: the drive from Rotterdam or Antwerp is several hundred kilometres shorter than from Manchester, and needs no ferry at all. Corvera airport doesn't currently have scheduled Dutch or Scandinavian routes, and Belgian service is a seasonal charter, so many Benelux owners either fly into Alicante, around 70-90 minutes from the resorts, or simply drive down. With a motorway almost all the way, it's a very comfortable default.

What do you need to prepare before you set off?

A short checklist keeps the trip smooth:

• Book ferries early, especially in school holidays, when cabins go first and prices rise.
• Check your insurance covers European driving for the full length of your stay.
• Carry your documents: V5C registration, insurance certificate, driving licence and your insurer's contact details.
• Plan fuel stops in France, particularly on quieter stretches and on Sundays.
• Count your days: days on the road in Spain and France count towards the Schengen 90/180-day allowance for UK passport holders.
• Compare removals quotes against a couple of car trips if you're moving furniture and belongings.
