People do this more than you'd expect, and for good reasons. You arrive with a car, a boot full of things you'd never fly with, and no baggage allowance.

It also matters more for Dutch and Belgian buyers than for British ones — because there are no direct flights from those countries to Murcia in any season, and the drive starts several hundred kilometres closer.

The Ferry Route

Plymouth to Santander also runs, but only from mid-April to November.

So the realistic shape is: leave Portsmouth on day one, arrive Santander on the morning of day three, at the house that evening. One long day of driving, no hotels.

Which Route, And What It Costs

The ferry trades money for driving. The overland route trades driving for money.

For a couple driving overland with the car, a rough all-in return figure is somewhere in the region of £700–1,000 once you count fuel, tolls, two hotel nights and the crossing. That's our arithmetic on the individual components rather than a quoted price, so treat it as an order of magnitude.

The ferry costs more up front and removes two days of driving. Whether that's worth it depends entirely on how you feel about long drives, and there's no general answer.

Why This Matters More If You're Dutch Or Belgian

Worth stating directly.

Corvera airport has no scheduled Dutch or Scandinavian route, in any season. Belgian service is limited to a seasonal charter. So the realistic options from those countries are Alicante plus a 70 to 90 minute drive, or driving the whole way.

And driving the whole way is a meaningfully shorter proposition from Rotterdam or Antwerp than from Manchester — several hundred kilometres closer to the French autoroutes, with no crossing to book.

If you're buying from the Netherlands or Belgium, price the drive properly before assuming you'll fly. For some households it becomes the default rather than the fallback.

The Honest Things To Check First

• Book ferries early, particularly around school holidays. Cabin availability drives the price more than the crossing does.
• Check what your insurance covers for European driving, and for how many days.
• Take the paperwork: V5C or equivalent, insurance certificate, driving licence, and any documentation your insurer requires.
• Plan your fuel stops in France rather than improvising. Rural stretches are long.
• Remember the 90/180 rule applies to your days in Schengen, and driving days count.
• If you're moving belongings rather than visiting, get a removals quote before assuming the car is cheaper. It often isn't once you've made three trips.
