Getting around from a Murcia golf resort is simple. From resorts such as Corvera Hills, Santa Rosalia and Condado de Alhama you are typically 15-30 minutes from Murcia city, the Mar Menor beaches or Cartagena, and the region's airport is close by. Most owners keep one car, and hire cars, taxis and airport buses fill the gaps.

How far are the resorts from the places you'll actually go?

This is the question I get asked most, and the answer is the best part of living here. The motorway network across the Region of Murcia is modern, wide and quiet by UK standards, so short distances really do mean short journeys.

Approximate drive times (off-peak, by car):

Times vary with traffic and exactly where on each resort you live, so treat them as a guide. The point is that a morning round, lunch on the seafront and an evening in Murcia's old town all fit comfortably into one day.

A good first test is the run from Santa Rosalia to Los Alcázares: about ten minutes from the resort to a seafront lunch on the Mar Menor.

Do you need a car on a Murcia golf resort?

For most owners, yes, and it's one of the pleasures of life here rather than a chore. The resorts are set a few kilometres outside their host towns, which is exactly what gives you the space, the views and the fairways on your doorstep. A car turns that into freedom: supermarket in ten minutes, beach in twenty, a different village for lunch every week.

Many households run a single car. Couples who both want to be independent sometimes add a second small runaround, but plenty of owners manage perfectly well with one, especially with a resort bar, restaurant and golf on site.

Should you buy a car or hire one?

It depends on how you use the house.

• Holiday use (a few visits a year): hire a car at the airport. Car hire desks operate at Corvera and at Alicante, so you collect the keys on arrival and drive straight to the resort.
• Long stays and winter seasons: many owners buy a car locally and leave it at the house. It means no hire queue, and you can keep your golf clubs in the boot.
• Moving over full time: most people buy a Spanish-registered car here rather than bring a UK one, which keeps insurance and paperwork straightforward.

Can you get around by public transport?

Yes, for the bigger journeys. The region has a useful network of trains and buses linking the main towns, and several are easy to reach from the resorts by a short drive or taxi:

• Cercanías C-1 (train): Alicante to Murcia, with one or two trains an hour and a journey of about 1 hour 20 minutes. Handy for Alicante airport connections and days out.
• C-2 Murcia–Lorca–Águilas: since October 2021 this route has run as a replacement bus service rather than a train. It still links Murcia with Lorca and the coast at Águilas.
• Renfe Media Distancia (train): Murcia to Cartagena, ideal for a day in Cartagena's Roman theatre and port without worrying about parking.
• Interbus (coach): connects Corvera airport with Murcia city and Cartagena, timed around flights.

The resorts themselves are not on scheduled town bus routes, so for day-to-day life most owners use the car and save public transport for city trips. Timetables change, so check the current Renfe and Interbus times before you travel.

What about taxis and airport transfers?

Taxis operate from the airport and from the towns near each resort, and booking a private transfer in advance is easy. Many owners book a transfer for arrival day and pick up a hire car the next morning once they're settled.

Taxis also make an evening out simple: dinner in Murcia city or on the Mar Menor, then home without anyone needing to stay on water.

How easy is driving in the Region of Murcia?

Very, for most UK and Irish drivers. The autovías are well maintained and much less congested than British motorways, signage is clear, and parking at supermarkets and beaches is usually free and plentiful outside peak August weekends. You drive on the right, which takes a day or two to settle into, and roundabouts give way to traffic already on them.

A practical tip: July and August afternoons are hot, so owners tend to drive to the beach or the city in the morning and enjoy the pool or the terrace later in the day.
